>> the first major storm of 2014 is here now. for us, it's a bit of snow. followed by dangerous bone-chilling temperatures. and that's not all. >> other parts of the northeast getting hammered from chicago to boston and new york. the conditionings are bringing travel to a stand till. >> there's winter storm out there bringing a double whammy to our area. >> first snow then arctic air coming our way as this system moves east.

more than 100 million people are impacted in 20 states. right now, parts of our region were you should a winter storm warning and school closings are already coming in. >> we have team coverage right now. we're covering maryland, virginia, the district, we're all over the place. how is it looks now? >> as far as the snow is concerned. the snow starting to move out of the region. we continue to see that snow moving off towards the east right now. take a look at the radar, still coming down around the metro area. around the i-95 corridor. everybody along the belt way seeing that snow. this but to the west, this snow is gone. some of the heaviest snow now around southern maryland. we will continue to see the heavy snow here through the next one to two hours. as you widen out, you can also see some drying back towards the west. this is where the colder air is, this is where the wind is and

definite accumulation. take a look at that tree. a lot of folks tell me they are concerned about their communities, especially with all this snow. and then you come right over here. this driver is going to have to get all the snow off the front windshield here. folks say when they outside and look at secondary roads like this one right here and they hear about what's going on on the highways, they are concerned the roads could possibly freeze overnight. >> it makes me nervous basically. >> tonight, aaron simms isn't taking any chances on 270 north on montgomery county. he pulls his tractor trailer over to wait out the storm. >> i would rather be on the side of the road than run into somebody. >> as the snow falls in gaithersburg, take a look at traffic moving at a slow pace on 270. tonight, maryland department of transportation officials tell me 520 snowplows are working around the clock in montgomery and prince george's county. they're worried about icy conditions, wind and snow blowing tomorrow morning. >> because of the wester tomorrow. it looks like it's going to be

enschool closings and delays. the long island expressway has been shut down or will be shut down. that is an hour from now. as conditions there take a turn for the worst with up to a foot of snow expected there. here's wnbc's michael george. >> the snow falls steadily all night. the wind starts to pick up. that's exactly what has emergency managers concerned. take a look behind me at the long island expressway. you're still seeing some movement out there. but that's going to stop at midnight. officials say they need to shut this this down from midnight until at least 5:00 a.m.

visibility is getting worse. they're going to the to see how conditions play out and make a final determination. at this point, they hope to reopen. it could be faced with a rmd charge. no flight into or out of the airport tonight and tomorrow. right now, all flights oit of reagan, dulles, boston, new york have been canceled because of the conditions just showed you. more than 200 flights locally have been impacted according to flight aware.com. those cancel laces are also have been a ripple effect that stretches all the way to california, almost 50 flights have been grounded at lax because of the conditions in the northeast. chicago's o'hare airport also grounded hundreds of flights today because of this massive storm.

>> this is a new video that demonstrates the dangers of distracted driving. a teenager in the upper left corner is fexing and unaware that he's headed for the curb. researchers from the national institutes of health and virginia tech found that we are distracted about 10% of the time behind the wheel. whether that is texting,

dialling or eating or whatever. the study discovered that all those activities could be a problem. it found chances of an accident increase significantly anytime your eyes are off the road for more than two seconds. >> a wheelchair bound woman is recovering after a metro bus hit her in southeast d.c. the 43-year-old was in her batte battery powered chair when the gus strucked her at w street and martin luther king jr. avenue this morn pg it's still unclear who's at fault. police are reviewing video from the bus and a nearby building in their investigation. the driver is now on leave and has to undergo a toxicology test. >> there are some new details tonight from the news 4 i team investigation of children left unattended outside maryland casinos. the team looked into state records after a mother was arrested for leaving her 4-year-old child in a car

outside the maryland live casino on tuesday. according to the maryland gaming commission, five children were left alone through november at casinos throughout the state. most of them happened during the summer months when school was out. a alisha brown has been leased on bail. the first winter storm of the year has wreaked havoc over much of the midwest. and now it's barrelling through ore area and into new york and new england. we want to show you live pictures now from times square where the snow continues to fall. and in bhooston, the tennessees are expected fob really bad over the next several hours. here's jim cantore. >> the winds are blowing, the snow continues to come down. the temperatures have also dropped. it is currently 8 degrees right now. and falling. the good news is that's giving us a very, very light snow. if you've ever been out west in the high country of colorado or into utah or wyoming, you get this light pixie dust champagne

powder kind of snow. that's what we've gotten through here. that's why it's being moved very, very easily. that's why the governor has left a lot of the interstate roads open tonight. traffic behind me is moving along well. you're not seeing lot of salt spread on the words because it's not going to work in this case. the snow is going to get heavier tonight. the winds are still going to be up 30, 40 miles an hour. that's going to create blizzard and low visibility conditions for so many venturing out. i tell you, you go off the road in a situation like this where the temperatures are going to stay in the single digit, and temperature wind chills are going to be below 10 below. it's going to be awful for anyone venturing out tomorrow. so this is a dangerous storm, even though we're not going to see super high totals across the inland err kbraps the light snow that does come down is so zo light, so fluffy it's going to flow around and create dangerous driving conditions long after the storm is gone.

january 2014, starting off on the stormy side. for wrc, i'm meteorologist jim cantore in boston. >> so tricky because it packs a punch. it's beautiful but at the same time it's so dangerous. >> i can't talk when it's cold like that. >> you're going to get your chance tomorrow. because it's gong to get very cold here. those temperatures are going to be tumbling overnight tonight. and with the wind chill, it will feel like 3 degrees early tomorrow morning. a lot of people talk act how pretty this snow looks outside, especially out there on all the trees. it will not look that pretty tomorrow morning. all that snow on the trees will be gone by the time you wake up as a result of the wind. you can see the winds blowing the flag out there towards june i don't know station. right now, the winds only about 10, 15 miles an hour. so not too bad. snow falling at the airport. current temperatures sitting at 34 degrees. winds out of the north at about 12 miles an hour. er and that, of course, gives us a little bit of a wind chill. we'll talk about the wind chills

in just a second. wait till you see these numbers. 34 in d.c., 27 in martinsburg, 32 over towards manassas. most areas below freezing. the snow moving away. still into portions of southern maryland. leonardtown, down around st. mary's county and the eastern shore. still seeing the snow, maybe another inch to come for areas close to the chesapeake. but for the rest of us, we are done. at least done with the accumulating snow. could be a few more areas of snow as we ploouf on through the night tonight but that's about it. waldorf, huntingtown, that's where the 12340e is coming down. it's going to drag in cold air behind it. what dafshs tomorrow will be.

notice snow is well off towards the east. the wind, though, starts to move in and it gets very windy and very cold during the early morning hours tomorrow. tomorrow morning will be frigid. let's take a look at the numbers. these are the current wind chills. 25 in washington, 11 in philly. 16 in hagerstown, look at pittsburgh. 4 below zero in gaithersburg. we have a wind chill advisory in effect until noon. howard county, montgomery county, northern fauquier and everybody out to the west. the wind chill could be below zero in some of these locations. in and around d.c., it will stay between 5 and 10 degrees. so once again a very cold friday. a high of 23. but the wind making it feel much colder than that. 35 on saturday. a little better on sunday. late showers on sunday. that's ahead of our next storm system that will bring us some

rain and snow mix on monday. high of 35. not worried about any accumulation, but guess what? it gets even colder next week. tuds, we are going to be down right cold. 20 degrees for a high. the wind chilg near 0 once again. and it stays cold on wednesday with a high near 30. 37 degrees on thursday. and guess what? another chance for a little bit in the what of some snow. so if you're hoping for a harsher winter, we've got it for you coming up over the next zen days. >> we were hoping for snowiey i winter. >> if d.c. hits two inches it's the first time in three years. >> take the pictures while you can because it's going to be gone tomorrow. >> we have sports coming up..
